The forthcoming National Health Policy particularly focuses on "Patient's Safety" and improvement in medical services availed in both the public and private sectors, said Federal Director General of Health, Professor Jooma here on Monday.
Professor Rashid A Jooma speaking at the 47th annual symposium of Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center assured that all legitimate rights and interests of doctors and medical community are also duly protected under the warranted document.
"Ministry of Health, for the first time, is working on a legislation to protect the interests of patients, provide them retribution and at the same time protect doctors' interest," the DG Health said. He referred to the instances of "Adverse Patients' Outcome," reported in a span of past few months in the country, however, preferring not to link them with "Negligence," as the required investigations were still underway.
"The fact, however remains that doctors in principle must demonstrate their capacity, professional skills and ensure patients' safety as their priority," said the Director General. Dr Rashid Jooma commenting that it is difficult to believe that mishaps may only be taking place in private institutions said many of the doctors' may be wrongfully implicated but at the same time many of the physicians require to improve service offered to their patients.
"Duty to improve services and more importantly patients' safety is a concept we do not have," commented the surgeon working as a senior health ministry official. He said the federal government believes to take step-wise measures based on data and proper rules and regulation with due provision for proper implementation.
