The government has paid an amount of Rs 1631.803 million compensation to the bereaved families of the persons killed and injured in terrorist incidents during 2007-08 and 2008-09, Interior Ministry sources said. The sources said the amount had been paid to 4,020 injured and the families of 2,526 persons killed in terrorist incidents taken place in Punjab, NWFP and Fata.
The information regarding compensation has yet not been collected from Sindh, Balochistan and Islamabad. They said Rs 440.12 million were paid to 159 persons killed in Punjab. Similarly, Rs 457.883 million were paid to 744 killed and 1,384 injured of terrorist attacks in NWFP. A sum of Rs 733.800 million was given to 1,623 killed and 2,636 injured of Balochistan terrorist attacks. The sources said that compensation was paid by provincial governments through DCOs.
Regarding payment of compensation against the financial losses, the sources said the newly established department PDMA in Peshawar was working to formulate a comprehensive data base from all districts in NWFP with regard to damages sustained by private infrastructure owing to terrorist attacks and bomb blast incidents.
In Fata, they said that a number of houses and properties were damaged during terrorist acts and operation against militants/ terrorists. According to official reports Rs 2089.608 million loss of property has so far been occurred due to military operation as well as terrorist acts.
However, a detailed assessment on the pattern of Swat will be carried out to find out extent of losses, whether entitled for any relief being a collateral damage or not being so because of use by militants, they added. To a question regarding modern training to the law enforcement agencies, the sources said the United States was imparting training to law enforcement agencies to combat terrorism.
The training is being given under a Memorandum of Intent (MoI) signed on September 1, 2004 between the governments of Pakistan and the United States, they added. So far, 1,750 Pakistani law enforcement officers belonging to all provinces have been trained under the programme to combat terrorism in Pakistan, they said adding that on this programme no expenditure on the part of government of Pakistan has been incurred.
