The World Health Organisation (WHO) in collaboration with University of Health Sciences (UHS) and Institute of Public Health (IPH) Lahore, is organising a workshop on "Public Health in Medical Education - Working with Grassroots" here at UHS on Tuesday (today).
WHO Regional Director based in Cairo, Egypt, Dr Hussein A Gezairy will be the chief guest on the occasion. He will be accompanied by WHO representative in Pakistan, Dr Khalif Bile Mohamud. Dr Hussein A Gezairy is on an official visit to Pakistan these days. Besides attending the workshop, he will also call on Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif.
Dr Gezairy is WHO's longest serving elected leader and heading this region consisting of 21 Muslim countries including Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran. He has been at the helm of the Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (EMRO) since 1982.
He is the former Saudi health minister and the founder of medical education in Saudi Arabia. He was the first president of the Supreme Council of the Arab Board of Medical Specialisations. The objective of the workshop is to discuss the public health role being played by community medicine departments of medical colleges in the context of primary healthcare and community-based training at the grass roots.
On this occasion, the WHO supported community-based programme in Kasur district, namely Basic Development Needs (BDN), that promotes primary healthcare interventions through community actions and inter-sectoral collaborations, will also be explained by the BDN community to the participants.
