The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Thursday filed an additional report with the Supreme Court on the implementation of December 16, 2009 verdict on National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).
It has been learnt that the additional report was submitted on behalf of NAB acting chairman Irfan Nadeem which states that the bureau had sought legal opinion from the Attorney General Anwar Mansoor Khan for reopening the money laundering cases against President Asif Ali Zardari in Swiss courts, however the Attorney General's opinion was still awaited. Deputy Prosecutor General Raja Amir who submitted the report said the report was submitted one day ahead of the relevant case (to be held today).
Earlier, on February 19, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had upbraided NAB for sitting on the court order of reopening corruption cases closed under the NRO, including those against President Asif Ali Zardari pending in Swiss courts. The chief justice had made these remarks while hearing bail pleas of Syed Rahat Mehmood, Muhammad Farooq Ansari and Muhammad Akhtar, allegedly involved in a fraud case relating to the Bankers City Housing Society.
He said a letter had also been sent to the law ministry for obtaining legal opinion for reopening Swiss cases, however reply was still awaited. In addition, cases against other accused however had been reopened. A three-member Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Tariq Parvez will hear the relevant case today (Friday).
