Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Thursday awarded 12 students of reputed educational institutions gold medals and cash prizes for research in IT and telecom sector during 2009. Secretary Cabinet Division, Abdul Rauf Chaudhry being chief guest presented gold medals to the winners of the competition during a ceremony at PTA headquarters.
The gold medals have been awarded on the basis of competition among accredited national universities arranged by PTA in April 2009 to acknowledge the best research projects in IT & telecom sector. A total of 18 research projects were received from different universities and after evaluation four projects were selected for awarding Rs 50,000 each.
Secretary Cabinet Division, while addressing to the participants said that PTA has taken an appreciable step that should be followed by the whole telecom industry to utilise research work of these young scholars. He assured the effective utilisation of these projects in the decision making process. He said that this scheme would go a long way in developing a strong relationship between the academia, industry and the relevant government organisations, adding that it would set precedent for the other sectors of economy.
Chairman PTA, Dr Yaseen said that the prime objective of these awards is to encourage academia's participation in the development of telecom sector through research. He said that as reflected by the telecom indicators, growth in the telecom sector has been immense in recent past. Similarly education sector has also shown tremendous growth in terms of establishing a number of quality educational and professional institutions, development of faculty and students' enrolments.
He said intense local research activities are need of the hour to sustain previous growth patterns, adding that this step can help in creating strong industry-academia linkage to foster development. The ceremony was attended by PTA Member Finance, Syed Nasrul Karim Ghaznavi, Member Technical, Dr Khawar Siddique Khokhar, the faculty members of the universities, parents of the awardees and representatives of the industry.
