A special court in Bangladesh sentenced 50 border guards to jail terms ranging from four months to seven years Monday for involvement in a deadly mutiny last year. A total of 74 people died when guards from the Bangladesh Rifles mutinied, apparently because of discontent over pay and the force's command structure.
The commanding officers for the border agency come from the regular armed forces. Fifty-seven army commanders were among those killed in the February 25-26, 2009 mutiny that began at the guards' headquarters in the capital Dhaka and spread to border camps across the country.
