The Lahore High Court (LHC) here on Tuesday adjourned till May 6, for further arguments, the hearing of a petition challenging construction of Benazir Bhutto monument in Rawalpindi or elsewhere with public exchequer. Earlier, petitioner Syed Feroz Shah Gillani advocate in his arguments submitted that Benazir could not be declared a national hero as she was involved in different cases of corruption and had been absconder in many cases.
PPP should not be allowed to construct monuments for its leader at the cost of public kitty. Representing the federal government, a Deputy Attorney General Naveed Inayat Malik, being irked by petitioner's arguments, asked him to take back his remarks for Benazir Bhutto. At this court remarked that the courts were not proper forum to hold debate for stature of any political leader.
PPP being a political party of the country could spend money for the construction of such monuments, the court also said in his remarks. In his petition the lawyer had also requested the court to remove names of politicians, including Bhutto from national assets like Islamabad International Airport, hospitals, government and semi-government departments and institutions. He said the head of such a government could not be a national hero.
