The Directorate-General of Intelligence and Investigation (DGI&I), FBR, Karachi, has foiled a bid to import a huge consignment of 'RBD Palm Olein', under the guise of soap stock, from Malaysia. Sources told Business Recorder on Saturday that credible information was received by DGI&I Director Mohammad Zahid regarding clearance of two containers, carrying RBD Palm Olein (HS code 1511.9030), in the garb of soap stock (PCT 1522.0090), imported by Muhammadi Impex, from Malaysia.
They said that the detained consignment was cleared from PICT after examination and laboratory test of one of the containers by MCC. As a result of examination, some 196 iron drums were found, of which, some 168 drums containing RBD palm olein weighting 29.5 metric tons and remaining 28 drums having 6.76 tons of glycerine. However, the same was misdeclared by the importer as soap stock to evade duties and taxes, they added.
Sources further said that the samples of the goods were also forwarded to HEJ Laboratory, Karachi, for chemical analysis to ascertain the actual description. They said the HEJ also confirmed that the said consignment was carrying RBD Palm Olein and glycerin instead of soap and gum stock.
Moreover, they said, the quantum of evasion of duty and taxes on the said consignment comes to Rs 1.46 million as the department has assessed Rs 1.63 million as leviable duty and taxes whereas the accused importer has only paid Rs 0.16 million in this regard. They said the department has lodged FIR against the importer and investigation in this regard is underway.
