Final of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) 'Global Business Challenge' will be held in the city on May 15. At least four winning students would participate in the global final scheduled to be held in Malaysia between August 5 and 6 this year, International Customer Marketing Manager, CIMA, Salema Hafiz said at a press conference organised at Karachi Press Club here on Wednesday.
CIMA's local representatives Javaria Hassan and Javed Iqbal were also present. Talking about the selection of candidates, Hafiz said that at least 220 undergraduate students from 47 different universities of Karachi and Lahore participated in the qualifying round that went through a competitive test out of which only 16 students qualified for the next stage.
The final competition among these selected students would be held on May 15 at city's local hotel and four winning students would take part in the global final of the CIMA to be held in Malaysia in the first week of August this year where the students would compete against students from UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, India, China, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, UAE and Australia, she added.
The final event would require the competing local teams to analyse, report and present a case study to local business leaders and a panel of expert judges. The winning team will go on to compete in the Malaysian global final which will also require them to present to an audience and panel of internationally high profile judges.
Hafiz said it was the first time that CIMA's 'Global Business Challenge' was taking place in Pakistan, which would allow local students to compete in an international competition and discover their business leadership potential. Such international competitions would provide students with an opportunity to test the depth of their financial knowledge, try out their business management skills and expand their ability, she said, adding that previous CIMA Global Business Challenge had led to internship opportunities from well known organisations for some of the students.
Javed Iqbal said that CIMA's Global Business Challenge would provide a once in a lifetime experience for Pakistani business and finance students to discover their business leadership potential and prove their skills globally. CIMA is a leading international institution providing a world-leading business and finance qualification. It was founded in 1919 and is the world's leading and largest professional body of management accountants with 172,000 members and students operating in 165 countries working at the heart of business. CIMA members and students work in industry, commerce and not-for-profit organisations.
CIMA works closely with employers and sponsors leading-edge research, constantly updating its qualification, professional experience requirements and continuing professional development to ensure it remains the employers' choice when recruiting financially-trained business leaders, Iqbal added.
Hassan, Pakistan Branch Representative said that since the formal launch of CIMA office in Pakistan in 2009, it had received an overwhelming response from business and finance students. She also gave an example of a Pakistani student who had gained the highest score in Paper P7 (Financial Accounting and Tax Principles), come joint third in Paper P1 (Management Accounting Performance Evaluation) and achieved joint seventh in the world in Paper P2 (Management Accounting Decision Management) out of total 31,000 students who sat in the latest round of CIMA exams in 87 countries world-wide.
