DG Agriculture finds some early sown rice nurseries

Directorate General Agriculture (Pest Warning) Punjab, Lahore has found some early sown rice nurseries at various locations in districts Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Pakpatan, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Kasur and Okara. According to a recent report of the Pest Warning wing of the Agriculture Department, according to the Pest Ordinance, raising of rice nurseries before May 20 is restricted.
It has been reported that these early sown rice nurseries will act as reservoir for multiplications of insects pests of rice especially rice stem borers and will serve as bridge for shifting this pest to normal season crops. Farmers have been advised by the department that these early sown nurseries should be discarded in order to save the normal sown nurseries after 20th May, 2010 to harvest a bumper crop, the report concluded.
