The city transporters have announced to observe a complete wheel-jam strike on May 25 if Sindh government did not issue a notification for increase in public transport fares by May 24, 2010. This was decided at a meeting of Karachi Transport Ittehad (KTI) held here on Monday with its Chairman Syed Irshad Hussain Bukhari in the chair.
The representatives of associated members including Sindh Bus Owners Association, Sindh Air-conditioned Bus Owners Association, UTS Bus Operators Association, Supreme Council of Pakistan Transporters, UTS Bus Operators, Metro Bus Association and Mini-Bus Operators Association attended the meeting.
Talking to Business Recorder, Irshad Bukhari said that Sindh Minister for Transport Akhtar Jadoon had held negotiation with transporters and allowed them to raise public transport fares by at least Rs 1 against the demanded increase of Rs 2 last month.
But the transport department of the Sindh government failed to notify the increase in public transport fares due to which the transporters were compelled to observe wheel-jam strike on May 25, if the notification to this effect was not issued by May 24, 2010, he added.
This time, the transporters would parks their buses, mini-buses and coaches on city's major arteries and roundabouts by blocking all the roads, he said. Moreover, officials at the provincial transport department said the notification regarding raise in fares likely to be issued by May 22, 2010 as the Minister had asked the Secretary Transport to issue the notification.
