Islamabad Police will establish Gender Crime Units and Ladies Complaint Units at different police stations under Gender Responsive Policing Project (GRPP) funded by German Government. As a pilot project first Gender Crime Unit will be set up in Ramna Police Station while Ladies Complaint Units at two other police stations to deal with women harassment cases and encourage women to seek police assistance sans any fear.
Training of Trainers (ToT) is a part of strategic set of capacity building activities of GRPP aimed at improving the training capacities of the police trainers-both men and women, said Hamid Zeb, Director General, National Police Bureau (NPB) while addressing the concluding session of the two-week Training of Trainers Course on Gender Sensitive policing under GRPP.
The Project is being funded by Foreign Ministry of Germany and jointly implemented by National Police Bureau and German Technical Co-operation (GTZ). Hamid Zeb said that the police trainers are the selected training staff of different police training institutes and they are given the opportunity to brush up their training skills and learn how to instill gender perspective in future training courses.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad, Kaleem Imam said that Gender Crime Unit in Ramna Police Station is being established, which will facilitate the process of gathering data on gender based crimes and send all the information regularly to the Gender Crime Centre at National Police Bureau for analysis and research.
"Our collaboration includes setting up of ladies complaint units at two police stations and up-gradation of women police station," Imam said. He congratulated the participants of the Training of Trainers (ToT) Course upon their successful completion of the training and said that mandate of police is to ensure citizen security without any discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, socio-economic status, sex and religion. He commended the Gender Responsive Policing Project (GRPP) for organising and facilitating the training of trainers' course for the instructors of police training institutes from across the country.
The Principal Advisor GTZ, Dr Khola Iram said that the GRPP focuses on police reforms ensuring that the principles of gender equality are systematically integrated throughout the police procedures, protocols, rules and regulations, reinforced through gender sensitive trainings and monitoring and evaluation tools are developed for assessing these measures.
The Country Director GTZ, Thomas Schaef appreciated the participants' learning motivation and their eagerness to carry forward the training agenda. He said that GRP Project is a Pak-German bilateral co-operation Project supported by the German Government. "We value our partnership and appreciate the efforts of the National Police Bureau and all the police organisations for working together on a very important subject of gender responsiveness in policing to combat violence against women," he added.
Meanwhile, Islamabad Traffic Police arranged a road safety workshop at Madrassa Jamia Fareedia, a religious seminary to acquaint the students with traffic laws. The SSP Traffic Dr Moeen Masood stated that ITP delivered lectures in 11 madaris aimed at inculcating traffic sense among them. The ITP education team delivered lectures on Road safety. The students of the Madarsa replied different questions raised by the team and obtained gifts from ITP education team. SSP Traffic Dr Moeen Masood while addressing the seminary said that the aim of holding such workshop is to acquaint the students of Madaris with Traffic laws and to inculcate traffic sense in the students.
