Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) is not only facing financial problems but also shortage of qualified physicians and related staff, however, the hospital is providing the best possible treatment to its patients.
This was stated by Dr Faisal Sultan, Chief Executive Officer of the hospital at 'Gala Dinners' in Faisalabad and Gujranwala, held in the honour of hospital's donors and well-wishers, that were apprised of the hospital's ongoing and future projects.
Dr Sultan told the audience that the operating budget of the hospital for year 2010 was Rs 3.3 billion, half of which, as they expected, would be met from donations and Zakat, while the other half from revenue services of the hospital.
Imran Khan, Chairman Board of Governors, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust (SKMT) in his address said that SKMCH&RC has been providing state-of-the-art treatment facilities to 75 percent of its cancer patients free of cost. He informed that the hospital has spent more than Rs 7 billion on philanthropically-supported patient care over the last 15 years, which became possible only with the blessings of Almighty Allah and co-operation of people of Pakistan.
Khan further informed that the hospital has spent US $5 million on the purchase and installation of Pakistan's 1st PET CT Scanning System, a machine which is considered essential for the diagnosis and treatment of many forms of cancer. He reiterated that cancer research was a top priority at SKMCH&RC and, by the grace of Allah Almighty, the research division has already established its identity at the international level.
