Federal Minister for Environment Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi has said that industrial revolution in the developed world has adversely effected the environment of the globe and has disturbed the elements of biodiversity. He said that we should not wait for the world to fix a day, week, month or year to celebrate any occasion of environment, in fact every moment should be captured.
Moreover, we should not follow the footprints, but make the footprints. He expressed these views while addressing in International Biodiversity Day 2010 celebrations held in Fatima Jinnah Women University here on Saturday. The minister said that due to lack of resources, unawareness and ill planning, there is unhealthy situation, however, we are fully capable of meeting the challenges of tomorrow and in making the world a more environment friendly to live. This task, however, cannot be achieved without the full support of the citizens.
Afridi said that the government, therefore, celebrates every occasion to create more awareness among the people to create a better environment around them. In this context, every year May 22 is observed as 'Biodiversity Day' and the event has become more significant as 2010 has been declared as the Year of Biodiversity, he added. Afridi underlined the need that the incredibly enormous and diverse biological resources of Pakistan once considered imperishable and unadulterated, are now prone to rapid depletion and contamination mainly due to anthropogenic activities.
Moreover, the major threats to the biodiversity of Pakistan are from deforestation, soil erosion and desertification, salination, water logging, hunting, fishing and agriculture practices. He mentioned that Pakistan faces a serious challenge of growing pollution in urban areas and watercourses. Likewise, discharge of sewerage and industrial effluent into aquatic and marine ecosystems is also on the rise.-PR
