Politicians from various parties in held Kashmir Monday held discussions on restoring peace in the region wracked by violent clashes between protestors and occupation forces, officials said. Authorities lifted a curfew in occupied Srinagar and other towns Sunday, but a shutdown disrupted life in valley. Markets, educational institutions, banks and other businesses remained closed and public transport was off the roads.
Leaders from major political parties including the ruling National Conference, Congress, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Bharatiya Janata Party attended the conference convened by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. But main opposition People's Democratic Party stayed away and asked the state authorities to end the crackdown on civilians.
