Degrees of 217 parliamentarians: Punjab University sends verification report to HEC
The Spokesman Punjab University has stated that the varsity has sent a verification report about 217 degrees of parliamentarians to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Tuesday, out of which six degrees have been declared fake and bogus.
Giving the break-up of the 217 verified degrees, the spokesman said 11 degrees of Senators, 55 degrees of MNAs and 15 MNAs elected against reserved seats have been found genuine. Similarly, 97 degrees of directly elected Punjab Assembly members and 28 degrees of MPAs elected against reserved seats have been found genuine, while degrees of five MPAs of reserved seats have been declared bogus. Four degrees of MPAs belonging to the Khyber Pakhtunkha Provincial Assembly were verified as OK whereas one degree of MPA of KP Assembly has been declared fake and bogus.
The Spokesman said the varsity has already returned photocopies of degrees of eight parliamentarians to the HEC, owing to their vagueness and illegibility. As such, out of 314 degrees of parliamentarians provided by the HEC for verification purposes, only 89 degrees are yet to be verified by the PU. The verification report regarding the same would be dispatched to the HEC at the earliest possible time.
The Spokesman also said the entire relevant record pertaining to the 314 degrees is available with the PU Examinations Branch which relates to the degrees of BA/BSc, MA/MSc, MBBS, BSc (Home Economics), B.Com and B. Ed examinations. However, the number of degrees of parliamentarians supplied to the PU, is far greater as compared to the other universities of the country.
In addition, the verification work of parliamentarians' degrees is a highly sensitive and responsible assignment. Therefore, the Special Committee constituted by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran, is minutely scrutinising the record of degrees with a view to establishing their authenticity beyond any shadow of doubt. He said the Vice-Chancellor has appreciated the hard work put in by the Committee members for thoroughly checking the degrees.
