Sindh Minister for Irrigation and Power, Jam Saifullah Dhareejo, on Sunday expressed confidence that the anticipated flood water would pass through the province of Sindh safely. The provincial minister was addressing a joint press conference at Sindh Secretariat here. Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister for Information, Jameel Ahmed Soomro was also present.
Jam Saifullah said the capacity of the Sukkur Barrage was about 15,00,000 cusecs, which, he said has been reduced to 9,00,000 cusecs due to some technical reasons but the expected flood will pass through safely. Speaking on the occasion, Jameel Soomro said necessary machinery along with boats has been provided to the different areas.
Jameel Soomro said 25 million rupees were paid to the provincial Health Department to provide health care facilities to the people. He also appealed the masses to cooperate with the government as well as their respective district administrations to cope with the expected flood situation.
In the expected flood situation, the whole Sindh Cabinet, all allies parties in Sindh government, the members of the National and Sindh assemblies, provincial advisors and concerned departments will work together to provide maximum relief to the people, he added.
Jam Saifullah said the expected flood water will be the biggest after one which had been passed through in 1976. He said besides staff and officials of the provincial Irrigation department, more persons have been hired to perform duties during expected flood.
He said officials have also been assigned duties round-the-clock for monitoring of the "protective bunds" as 16 staff members have been deployed at each mile, who will monitor the situation and ensure security of the protective bunds.
He said the Sindh Irrigation department will make all out efforts for the protection of the vulnerable points at all protective bunds. Co-ordination will also be developed with the local people and landlords in this regard, he added. The provincial Irrigation Minister said the evacuation of the people from the "katcha areas" is also a concern of the government.
He said it is the quality of the people of Sindh that they stand united in the need of hour and they help each other. He said the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Pakistan Amry is also alert in co-ordination with all concerned departments. The Sindh Minister said we have identified 144 vulnerable points in Sindh, where special attention will be paid to handle the situation.
