Awami National Party (ANP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazl) on Thursday demanded of the government to hand over Karachi to the Army to arrest the scourge of targeted killings and establish writ of government. Both parties in the Senate on Thursday said that the police and Rangers have failed in bringing peace in the city and demanded of the government to hand over Karachi to the Army to end bloodshed.
Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) also staged walkout from Senate against the government inaction particularly Interior Minister Rehman Malik protesting lack of response towards the arrest of culprits involved in the murder of Sindh Assembly member Raza Haider and miscreants who went on killing spree in Karachi.
Federal Minister for Science and Technology Muhammad Azam Khan Swati of JUI-F said while speaking on targeted killing in Karachi that police and Rangers have failed in performing their duties and demanded of the government that the city should be handed over to the Army for maintaining the law and order situation.
He said the government should also de-weaponize Karachi to establish peace in the city. "If we do not hand over Karachi to the army, we cannot establish peace in the city," he said. Senator Ilyas Ahmed Bilour of ANP endorsing Azam Sawti's assertion said, "Police and Rangers have failed to end targeted killings in Karachi. We cannot control target killings and restore law and order situation if we do not send army to Karachi, he warned. "
He said on one hand MQM Chief Altaf Hussain gave the message to his party workers to remain peaceful and avoid taking law into their hands while on the other federal Minister Babar Ghuri gave emotional statement to instigate the party workers. He said that Pakhtuns are being killed in Karachi.
Colonel Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi(Retd) of MQM said Interior Minister Rehman Malik has given statement on the floor of the House that the murderers of Raza Haider would be arrested within 24 hours but three days have passed and no culprit has been arrested.
He said targeted killing and torching of shops and property is going on in Karachi no action has been taken so far against those elements who are involved in these acts. He said the provincial home minister and Rangers could not bring peace to the city.
Later, the MQM senators staged walk out from the Senate. Leader of the House Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari said "there is provision in the Constitution that the federal government can send army on the request of the provincial government. We have constituted a joint investigating committee to trace the killers of Raza Haider."
He said that the government is taking all possible measures to establish peace in the city. "The political parties should not criticise each other and get united to find the solution to avoid such incidents. Some forces want to destabilise the country," he added. Senator Muhammad Ali Durrani said the political parties should shun blame game and find the solution to targeted killings. "The leaders of PPP, ANP, MQM and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) should form a human chain in Karachi to show solidarity to the nation to restore peace in the city," he said.
