The 'super flood' is due to strike Sindh in next 12 to 24 hours at Guddu Barrage. According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the province, specially areas along with the Indus River, would be affected due to extreme high flood conditions in Indus River.
Analysis of current hydrological data indicates that areas along the Indus River would be affected badly due to embankment breaches at many places in Sindh province, Saleh Ahmed Farooqui, Director General (DG), PDMA told Business Recorder on Thursday.
He said the flood discharge at Guddu reached to 820,000 cusecs and is expected to rise rapidly during the next 24 hours. An exceptionally high flood peak of 900,000 to 100,000 cusecs would reach Guddu in next 12-24 hours. These peak flood flows are likely to be sustained for 48 hours due to the continued addition of flood water from Jhelum River and Chennab River, the DG added.
He said low-lying areas of District Ghotki (Tehsils Daharki, Mirpur Mathelo, Ubauro, Khanpur, Mahar and Ghotki) and District Kashmore (Tehsils Kashmore, Tangwani and Kandhkot) would be inundated and face riverine flooding. He said 48 hours sustained peak flood is expected to reach Sukkur Barrage on August 07.
"The water level at Sukkur Barrage reached 380,000 cusecs and is rising rapidly. All the low-lying areas of District Sukkur (Tehsils Sukkur, Rohri Saleh Pat and Panno Aqil), Districts Shikarpur (Tehsils Garhi Yaseen, Khanpur, Lakhi and Shikarpur) and District Larkana (Tehsils Dokri, Bakrani, Larkana and Ratodero would inundate and face riverine flooding due to super flood at Sukkur", he added.
"However, the flood peak of 600,000 cusecs to 700,000 cusecs exceptionally high flood would pass from Kotri sometime on August 07 onwards," he said. "The authority has focused early preparedness measures, issue of early warnings, establishment of shelter camps, ensuring 100 percent evacuation of all vulnerable communities of low lying areas, mobilisation of resources for effective response mechanism and all the equipment and manpower should be ready to respond quickly to any disaster. It also be ensured that the District Emergency Operation Centres (DEOC) are working round-the-clock", he concluded.
