Raw sugar sank to close down 3 percent on Thursday, while coffee and US cocoa finished little changed after a quiet and choppy session. The October raw sugar contract tumbled 0.59 cent or 3.1 percent to end at 18.29 cents per lb. Wide range from 18.20 to 19.13 cents.
Jack Scoville, analyst for brokers The Price Group, said consumer buying which supported futures seem to be "running out of steam." The flow of supplies, especially from top grower Brazil, is improving despite shipping delays in that country.
Arabica coffee futures for September inched up 0.10 cent to settle at $1.6985 a lb. Coffee continued to consolidate higher after Monday's sharp fall from a 12-1/2-year top at $1.8150 per lb, basis September. Benchmark September dipped $5 to settle at $3,113 per tonne. Quiet consolidative session after closing Wednesday at the highest level since July 16.
