Suspension of gas supply to industrial units in Punjab may lead to closure of industrial units, massive job losses and cancellation of foreign order worth billion of rupees, President Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry in a statement issued on Monday said after having a meeting with a large number of industrialists affected by suspension of gas supply.
He termed the gas supply suspension decision as ill-planned. He said that there was no justification for focusing on Punjab in case of eventuality. He said that if there was a crisis due to problems at Qadirpur gas field, it would have been better if the shortage was shared with the whole country instead of targeting Punjab alone.
He said that the industrial sector in the province was already passing through very critical times due to acute shortage of electricity and bad law and order situation. He said that the business community was hoping an improvement in the gas supply to the industrial sector but unfortunately things have worsened.
The LCCI president said that a number of industrial units would be left with no other option but to close down their operations if the gas supply situation did not improve. He appealed to the Prime Minister Gilani to look into the matter and issue necessary directions to the concerned authorities.
