Thousands of displaced persons are coming to Karachi after the massive evacuation started from Jacobabad and other flood affected areas of Sindh. Over 15,000 persons have so far reached the city, while thousands of affected people are coming to this city through different transport means. Over 6,000 displaced persons were stationed at Bin Qasim Town on Saturday morning, where tents and makeshift shelters have been arranged for them.
More flood affected people are shifting to Karachi, Hyderabad, Rohri, and other cities of both Sindh and Punjab by special train services, sources said. Besides, thousands of flood affected people have also been accommodated in various houses, schools and colleges in three towns of the city like Bin Qasim Town, Gadap Town, Orangi Town and Keamari Town. Two trains have reached the city while the third one carrying another 3,000 DPs is on the way to Karachi from Kotri. Juman Darwan, a former member city council, said that almost 600 people have been accommodated in various houses in Orangi Town near Baloch Pul. Most of them are from Jacobabad.
He said that these people of the area were arranging all necessary foods medicines and other requirements of the DPs with the help of provincial government. Almost 90 percent of the Jacobabad City was evacuated and around 10 percent people were yet to be shifted to safer places.
Though people were shifting through other transport sources, majority was travelling by trains, specially the free trains. The provincial government has also arranged makeshifts in different areas like Bin Qasim, Malir, Superhighway and Keamari Town. Beside the tent service three camps were also arranged in Bin Qasim town like Degree College Razaqabad, and another two in Cattle Colony.
Executive District Officer (EDO) and other concerned officer were also supervising the camps to provide the necessary things to the flood hit families. Besides, according to sources, most of the DPs have been accommodated in different areas of interior Sindh like Nawabshah, Larkana, Dadu, etc.
Few families of the DPs who had been given the shelter in a government school in Landhi Town complained that they were provided nothing in food and other necessaries so far by the government. Beside the government's move to shift the DPs and facilitate them in cities, many political parties like Muttahida Qaumi Movement and Jamaat-i-Islami with different NGOs were also active in relief operation.
