Firmness prevailed on the currency market on Thursday as mostly the rupee retained its overnight levels versus the US currency, dealers said. On the interbank market the rupee shed two paisa at 85.62 versus dollar for buying and by one paisa for selling at 85.66, currency viewers said.
In the fourth Asian trade dollar edged up against yen on Thursday with investors reluctant to chase yen higher as they waited to see if the Bank of Japan or the government will take new steps to rein in the yen's rise. Earlier, rumours had circulated in the market that the BoJ would hold an emergency policy meeting at 2 pm (0500 GMT).
That followed a media report that the central bank had started considering additional monetary easing steps. The dollar briefly pared its gains against yen after sources familiar with the matter said the Bank of Japan is highly unlikely to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday. Indian rupee was trading at Rs 46.56 versus dollar, Malaysian ringgit was available at 3.1290 in terms of the US currency and Chinese yuan was trading at 6.791 against dollar.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee maintained its overnight levels in relation to the US currency for buying and selling at 85.45 and 85.60, they said. The rupee gained 60 paisa against euro for buying and selling at Rs 108.60 and Rs 109.10, they added.

The Pak rupee opened on a positive note and improved 10-paisa in its value against the dollar in the open market on Thursday. According to the currency dealers, the dollar, in the absence of buying support, failed to maintain its day earlier position and slide down to Rs 85.40 and Rs 85.60, as its buying and selling rates against Rs 85.50 and Rs 85.70, respectively. However, the rupee stayed unchanged on buying side while it was declined on selling side in relation to the pound sterling. The pound was traded at Rs 132.50 and Rs 133.50 on buying and selling side, as compared to Rs 132.50 and Rs 133.20 respectively, the dealers said.
RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee remained firm against the dollar at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Thursday. The dollar opened at Rs 85.20 (buying) and 85.70 (selling) against the last rate of Rs 85.20 (buying) and 85.70 (selling). It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 85.20(buying) and Rs 85.70 (selling).
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 131.74 (buying) and Rs 133.80 (selling) against the previous rate of Rs 131.66 (buying) and Rs 134.32 (selling). It did not observe further change in the last trading hours and closed at Rs 131.74 (buying) and Rs 133.80 (selling). UAE Dirham opened at Rs 23.13 (buying) and Rs 23.32 (selling) in the morning session against the last rate of Rs 23.13 (buying) and Rs 23.32 (selling). The value of Dirham against the rupee remained unchanged in the evening session and closed at Rs 23.13 (buying) and Rs 23.32 (selling).
