Sugar price continued to rise in the wholesale market of the provincial metropolis and registered an increase of Rs 2 per kilogram on Saturday. The sweetener price reached Rs 7,700 per 100 kilograms mark on Saturday against Rs 7,500 per 100 Kilograms of Friday. Sugar dealers in Akbari Mandi told Business Recorder that the prices of the sweetener continued upward trend with out any check.
Akmal Saleem, a dealer in the Mandi emphasised that there was no check on the sugar price. He accused the millers keep of changing sugar price every hour. He said price of sugar reached Rs 7,500 per 100 kilogram in the market and Rs 7,400 per 100 kilograms ex-mill on Friday, registering an increase of Rs 100 per 100 kilogram as compared to Thursday's price.
He said that the subsidised sugar was available to domestic consumers at Rs 55 per kilogram at Utility Stores and at Rs 61 per kilograms in the Ramzan Bazaars, however, confectioners, bakers and sweet makers had to approach the wholesale market for buying the commodity in bulk.
President Lahore Sugar Dealers Association, Asghar Butt said that it seemed no body care for the nation and the people as there is no check on the rising price of sugar and all those involved in sugar business are fleecing the masses with impunity. He lamented that no reason was being given regarding the fresh increase in sugar price.
