A Turkish soldier and five members of the outlawed Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) were killed in clashes in south- east Turkey over the weekend, media reports said Sunday. The military launched an operation against the PKK group after they fatally injured the soldier in a shootout in Hakkari province.
The PKK is considered a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union. Although the group initially sought to create an independent Kurdish state, the PKK now says it is fighting for increased political and cultural rights for Turkey's Kurdish minority. The Kurdish conflict has claimed more than 25,000 lives in Turkey in the past quarter-century.
