The demand of MQM Chief for the military to "take any martial law type action against corrupt politicians and feudals" has not only open a new debate but also attracted criticism from different political and other quarters.
Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Amir Syed Munawar Hassan in his reaction termed the statement of MQM Chief as mockery of Constitution and law. "It does not suit to head of a party who is part of present elected government to issue such type of statements," he said.
Munawar said the country was passing through crisis and situation it was facing today was also due to past Martial Law. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has also criticised Altaf's statement. The HRCP said, "It is a poor reflection on the nation's adherence to democratic norms when one of the main political parties starts pleading not with parliament, or with the people, but with patriotic Army generals to act against politicians."
The HRCP said there might be many complaints against politicians and the democratically elected government. However, experience has demonstrated beyond any doubt that army take-overs were rationalised on the pretext of eliminating corruption but they only aggravated the state of affairs.
