Assessing flood losses: UNFPA delegation arrives in Sukkur

A delegation of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), led by Dr Henia Dakkak and Country Head, Jose Ferraris arrived in Sukkur to observe and assess the damages in the areas affected by floods. While talking to media, the delegation said they are here to evaluate the destruction occurred that due to floods and to estimate tribulations, so that every affected person could get relief.
They said, "the present emergency is not a small emergency, it is above the scale of tsunami and the impact of this disaster will persist for many years on people of Pakistan". They told that a government or any agency alone cannot face this kind of huge disaster, so all nations have to be unified to help Pakistan in this ruinous moment.
They said that due to the lack of provision of proper information, there were many misunderstandings but they are here to clear all misunderstandings to evaluate and reveal actual facts so that mobilisation of other nations can be done fluently to provide relief to the affectees of the flood. In the beginning, they maintained, there was confusion regarding the scale of disaster, that was why there was not much clear demonstration by donor agencies in the start, but now, a lot of UN agencies are providing support to Pakistan government.
Meanwhile, UN is trying to unite all the nations on one platform and is also in process of trust building to provide more benefit and relief to the affectees of flood. On the occasion, Federal Project Director Maternal, Neonatal & Child Health (MNCH), Dr Farooq Akhtar told that to control the health issues at the relief camps, MNCH, with the support of UN, has designed static and mobile medical camps which are working in the affected areas to provide free medical health care facilities, especially to the women and children, the most vulnerable group.
Director MNCH Sindh, Dr SahibJan Badar briefed that till today, more than 22 thousands patients have been attended and more than 65 deliveries have been conducted at relief camps. Earlier, UNFPA delegation, accompanied by MNCH team, visited the affected areas of Ghotki, Sukkur and Shikarpur and also visited the medical camps established by MNCH where lady doctors, along with other medical staff, was busy in provision of free medical facilities to the affectees. The UNFPA delegation highly appreciated and encouraged the efforts of MNCH for flood affectees.
