The devastations caused by unprecedented floods, MQM Chief Altaf Hussain's statement regarding army intervention, lynching of two brothers in Sialkot, President Zardari's visit to London and the alleged involvement of Pakistan cricketers in match-fixing would be the major issues to b discussed in the forthcoming session of the National Assembly.
Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida has summoned the NA session on September 2, on the requisition of PML-N, the largest opposition party in the Parliament. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) have submitted privilege motions against each other. It might lead to chaos if both the parties raised the issue of privilege motions on the floor of the Lower House.
Sources said that the issues of reconstruction and rehabilitation, President's visit to London, match fixing issue and Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain statement would be discussed in the National Assembly. The PML-N had submit privilege motion against MQM Chief Altaf Hussain's statement asking the "patriotic Army general" to act against corrupt politicians and feudal lords.
Similarly, the MQM has also submitted two privilege motions against Nawaz Sharif for hiding facts from nation, making false assertions and meeting army leadership in violation of the promise made in Charter of Democracy. Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly had said in the press conference that his party would raise the issues including Altaf's statement, flood, President Zaradri's visit to London and others. Iqbal Muhammad Ali Khan of MQM told Business Recorder that his party would raise privilege motion on the floor if the PML-N does so.
He said that MQM would also raise the scandal of match fixing of Pakistan Cricket Team and issue of flood. PML-Q MNA n Marvi Memon has also submitted an adjournment motion seeking debate on the in-competency of the government to carry out its constitutional responsibility to protect the people from the floods, including lack of a disaster management strategy.
Talking to Business Recorder, Marvi said that the issue of floods and its affects is more important than any other matter and the House should only discuss this issue on priority basis. She said that as much as 20 million people have been directly affected by the devastating flood and a major portion of the country is submerged in floodwater.
However, it seems that the political parties would prefer to blame one another for political mileage instead of developing any consensus to handle the looming crisis in the session, which is not only a matter of concern for the people in Pakistan but equally for the international community also.
