Pakistan Muslim League chief Nawaz Sharif has castigated the pronouncement of priest Terry Jones of Florida, USA, that copies of holy Quran will be burnt on September 11 to commemorate the attack on New York's twin towers years ago. "This announcement by a priest is a matter of the highest alarm and runs the danger of risking an already fragile inter-faith harmony and plunging the world deep into religious hatred and intolerance," Nawaz Sharif said in a press statement on Thursday.
Exhorting upon the world community to make concerted efforts to stop a maddening act, the PML-N chief said the announcement of the priest had invited the highest provocation of the Muslim the world over. "All religions of the world show respect to the religions of other faiths and their holy books; this is the paramount basis of inter-faith harmony and this must not fall prey to the call of an insane priest who seems hell bent to wreck whatever religious harmony and tolerance persists today," he added.
Had such an annoying act taken place, this would be no less than a tragedy and seriously jeopardise global efforts to maintain peace and inter-faith harmony that is extremely vital in a conflict-ridden atmosphere as obtaining at present, the PML-N chief added.
He said it was now the US administration that was under a tremendous global obligation to use all means to stop such a horrible crime against religion and international peace. Had this criminal act taken place, it would not only endanger the already fragile harmony among different religions but also demonstrate how a single individual could destroy the good work of millions for the sake of bringing humanity together.
