The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) issued on Thursday a flood alert for Sutlej river warning the people of Kasur, Okara and Pakpattan residing in the low lying areas to take precautionary measures. Chief Meteorologist, Akram Anjum said that the present Meteorological situation suggests that rains are expected over the catchments of Sutlej and Beas rivers during next week. That may cause increase inflows in these rivers.
He said it is likely that India may also release water from their dams on these rivers in coming days. During the next 48 to 72 hours (Saturday and Sunday) river Sutlej at G.S.Wala may record rise in gauge ranging between 18-19 feet (approximately 35,000 to 40,000 cusecs).
Anjum said this might create inundation in low-lying areas of river Sutlej. The inhabitants in the riverbed around the districts of Kasur, Okara and Pakpattan may specially be in danger, therefore local authorities may take precautionary measures to warn the people residing in the riverbed. FFD would issue a further warning as soon as it receives any significant water release information from India.
Flood forecast for River Indus at Kotri FFD further stated according to latest Hydrological condition River Indus at Kotri is likely to remain in high flood level, ranging between 5,85,000 to 5,50,000 cusecs during next 24 hours.
Under this scenario, the inundation and riverine flooding is expected at low lying areas of Sajawal, MirpurBataro, MirpurSakro, JhangShahi, AllahRakhio, ShadadKot, Jamshoro, Matiari, Makaro, Ketibander, Shahbander in Thatta and Hyderabad districts along with the riverbed.
Flood situation River Indus at Kotri is in high flood and falling. River Indus at Guddu and Sukkur is in low flood.
