The European Union this week granted export licences for 943,000 tonnes of soft wheat, the highest volume in three years, the EU's executive said on Thursday. This week's export licences took the total since the beginning of the 2010/11 (July-June) season to 4.3 million tonnes, up from 3.5 million tonnes issued by the same stage last season, official data showed.
An official at the European Commission told Reuters this was the biggest weekly total since EU grain export subsidies were ended in September 2007. European wheat exports, led by France, have accelerated sharply since last month as importers have reacted to an export ban imposed by drought-hit Russia by switching to alternative supply sources.
In this week's total, nearly 714,000 tonnes of wheat export licences were requested in France, almost 117,000 tonnes in Germany, 26,000 tonnes in Latvia and more than 24,000 tonnes in Romania. In other grains, the EU this week granted licences to export 129,000 tonnes of barley, bringing the total so far this season to 1.1 million tonnes, up from 216,000 tonnes a year earlier, the data showed. The weekly volume included nearly 93,000 tonnes in Germany and just over 35,000 tonnes in Lithuania. Overall, the European Union has granted licences to export 5.8 million tonnes of grains so far this season, against 4.3 million tonnes a year ago.
