Partly Facetious: Where is money coming from?
"So why did Shahbaz Sharif threaten to let the flood waters take Rehman Malik?"
"It wasn't because Malik continues his rather silly practice of denying saying some thing in spite of the fact that his words are recorded. I am referring to the latest faux pas this guy made with respect to launching a Swat like operation in Balochistan."
"Well the Prime Minister accepted his denial over and above irrefutable proof to the contrary."
"But you know in the PM's talk with a group of Islamabad based senior journalists he admitted that any change in the cabinet would be taken at the CEC level."
"Ah right! Enter President Zardari and therefore Malik stays."
"Indeed but Shahbaz Sharif let his anger loose and Rana Sanaullah let loose his own salvo against the Interior Minister but I wasn't sure what the issue was."
"The issue doesn't show any one of these three in a good light."
"How come?"
"Well Nadra, under the direct control of the Interior Minister, has issued smart cards or watan cards which are to be distributed to the floods affectees and envisage Rs 20,000 to each family."
"Where is the money coming from?"
"From our taxes...so it isn't money that is coming from private donations or anything like that but cash diverted by the federal government to provide relief to the flood affectees."
"So?"
"So Rehman Malik argued that since Nadra has issued the cards and since Nadra comes under his jurisdiction he should launch the cards and this means he must distribute our tax money to the affectees and make some brownie points."
"Does Rehman Malik pay any taxes?"
"I am not sure, he has business interests in the UK and his family is not here and so I am not sure."
"But anyway allowing Malik to get political mileage out of distributing watan cards would be a waste. He doesn't have a constituency. He is only an appointee."
"Right but he loves to see his face on TV."
"Indeed and Shahbaz Sharif and Nawaz Sharif wanted to distribute the cards themselves."
"Yes and so the threats and counter threats."
"So why did it all die down?"
"The PM stepped in once again."
"And Malik denied it all?"
Don't be facetious."
