The sugar mills of Khyber Pakhutnkhwa are likely to start sugarcane crushing from November 1 and to discuss the matter the sugarcane commissioner had convened a meeting on October 2 of the sugarcane board. This was stated by Cane Commissioner, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Saeed-ur-Rehman while talking to Business Recorder on Monday.
He said that decision on fixation of the price 40-kilogram sugarcane would also be discussed in the meeting. The Cane Commissioner, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa said that the provincial government was awaiting the announcement of the Punjab government for fixation of the value of 40-kilogram commodity. The government of Punjab has fixed Rs 125 for 40-kilogram and we will also pursue the sugar millers to pay the minimum price to the growers of our province.
Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) has already announced lighting up the boilers of their units for sugar production from November 15. However, proper crushing season would start at the end of November. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has a total of 7 sugar mills with four units situated only in D.I. Khan, one each in Bannu, Peshawar and Mardan divisions of the province. During last crushing season the two sugar mills failed to complete crushing seasons due to the unavailability of sugarcane.
The Ghur manufacturing Ghanis have been emerged as big competitors of the sugar manufacturing units in the province in light of competitive price. The Cane Commissioner agreed with the contentions that that the cost of production of sugarcane had increased by manifold and the price offered by the millers did not suit the growers.
