The Chief Justice Lahore High Court on Friday fixed a petition, filed by Pakistan Railways seeking vacation of the stay earlier granted against the purchase of US locomotives, for hearing on October 14 before the bench of Justice Nisar Ahmad Sheikh.
Pakistan Railways through Barrister Syed Ali Zafar submitted that the Railways faced an acute shortage of locomotives as a result of which it was unable to properly, safely or in a timely manner transport the passengers and the freight to various parts of the country and consequently loss is being caused to the national exchequer on a daily basis.
He stated that for the next decade, Pakistan Railways requires at least 675 robust heavy duty locomotives to meet the transportation requirements of the country and currently only 520 locomotives are available out of which 302 have outlived their utility, hence less than 200 locomotives are in operation. He prayed to place hearing of the matter before any other bench so that their pleadings for proceedings with the tendering process may be made.
