Pakistan Wapda Hydro-Electric Central Labour Union Tuesday staged a protest demo against the abolition of Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) and granting autonomy two four power distribution companies in the country.
A large number of labourers participated in the rally to oppose what they called the unwise decision of the Ministry of Water and Power to abolish Pepco and granting autonomy to four distribution companies, including Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad and Multan and the running of the remaining distribution companies through a standing committee. The labour union was also protesting against two percent increase in the power tariff.
The workers were led by provincial chairman, Pakistan Wapda Hydro-Electric Central Labour Union, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Haji Mohammad Iqbal, secretary Gohar Taj, deputy chairman, Mustajab Muzdooryar, deputy secretary Ali Said, secretary information, Gohar Ali Gohar, Mohammad Tariq, Mohammad Hussein, Ahmad Zamir, Faridullah Khadim and others. The protesting workers of Wapda were carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans in favour of their demands. Addressing the protesting workers, provincial chairman, Mohammad Iqbal, provincial secretary, Gohar Taj and others termed the steps taken by the ministry as unwise. They said that political interference in the recruitment and commissions have already destroyed the profitable organisation.
