Closing stock market indices
Major stock markets outside the United States ended on Thursday.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 6,455.27 points, up 20.75 or 0.32 percent.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 3,819.17 points, down 9.17 or 0.24 percent.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 6,440.97 points, down 14.16 or 0.22 percent.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The FT IT All Share index closed at 21,695.71 points, down 38.76 or 0.18 percent.
MELBOURNE STOCKS EXCHANGE: Australian shares rose 1.7 percent as miners and banks racked up gains, led by Rio Tinto which notched its best one-day gain since May on strong production. The S&P/ASX 200 index added 79.2 points to 4,699.08.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: South Africa's rand rose again to its highest in nearly three years as the US dollar took a battering globally, while stocks stumbled for the first session in five, on concern recent gains may be overdone. The All-share index closed at 30,251.34 points, down 16.12 or 0.05 percent. The All Gold index closed at 2,558.68 points, down 26.81 or 1.04 percent, while the Industrial index closed at 25,271.75 points, up 19.16 or 0.08 percent.
