Firmness prevailed on the currency market on Tuesday as the rupee struggled to bring back some lustre in process of easy supply of dollars, dealers said. The rupee inched up by one paisa against dollar for buying at 85.84 and it also rose by two paisa for selling at 85.88, they said.
In the second Asian trad dollar held just a yen above its 1995 record low against the Japanese currency on Tuesday, prompting Japanese policy-makers to remind the market that Tokyo might intervene if pushed to stop its currency from rising.
INTERBANK MARKET RATES: The dollar barely moved against a basket of currencies as euro failed to sustain gains the previous day back towards a recent eight-month high, highlighting the fact that the greenback is finding bouts of support. Spot yuan closed down against dollar on Tuesday after the People's Bank of China set a slightly weaker mid-point, continuing a pause in the yuan's appreciation since a surprise interest rate rise a week ago.
The yuan has generally fallen since the rate increase was announced last Tuesday, pulling back from a 2-plus percent rise from early September to mid-October, its quickest pace of appreciation since its landmark revaluation in July 2005. Indian rupee was trading at Rs 44.35 versus the dollar and Malaysian ringgit was available at 3.096 in terms of the US currency.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee again held the weekend levels of dollar for buying and selling at 85.95 and 86.10, they said. The rupee also gained 70 paisa versus the euro for buying and selling at Rs 119.32 and Rs 119.82, they added.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The remained unchanged against dollar in Lahore currency market on Tuesday. According to moneychangers, there was no visible change in the dollar's supply and demand situation. The dollar was traded at overnight Rs 85.90 and Rs 86.20 as buying and selling rates, respectively. On the other hand, the rupee depreciated by 50 paisa for buying and 80 paisa for selling against British pound. The pound was purchased and sold at Rs 135.00 and Rs 135.80 as compared to overnight Rs 134.50 and Rs 135.00, respectively.
RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee-dollar parity remained unchanged at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Tuesday.
The dollar resumed trading at Rs 86.15 (buying) and Rs 86.60 (selling) against the last rate. It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 86.15 (buying) and Rs 86.60 (selling).
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 134.00 (buying) and Rs 135.20 (selling) in the morning session. It did not observe further change in the last trading hours and closed at Rs 134.00 (buying) and Rs 135.20 (selling).
