A recently posted video by Boston Dynamics shows Atlas the robot doing a back-flip and it is as awesome as you can imagine a robot back-flipping.

Although it is not a new thing for a robot to do a back flip, it is the first time that Boston Dynamics' two-legged Atlas has been seen doing one.

Humanoid Atlas is seen jumping over some obstacle boxes and then he leaps up onto a three feet tall box and does a 180 degree spin. He plants the landing and does a back flip off the platform and lands on a gymnastics mat.

To further show off its achievement, the company replays Atlas’s slick move in slow motion on YouTube. At the end, a blooper is also shown where Atlas loses his stance and falls into the box.

Atlas is a bipedal robot that uses sensors in its body and legs to keep balance. It also uses stereo sensors and Light Detection and Ranging to detect and avoid obstacles.

Boston Dynamics, a robotics lab, is famous for making machines with realistic movements. However, it was bought by Alphabet and later sold to Softbank, a Japanese company, Science Alert reported.  This team is at the top for replicating human and animals’ movements into machines.

Their robots include BigDog, a four-legged robot mule that can carry 150 kg (330 lbs) on its back and also scale rough terrain including mud and rubble. Their other creation is a military-looking Spot which is a slightly smaller quadruped.
