The economic, political and environmental situation has exposed the shortcomings in the way the public policy and regulations have developed in areas such as financial regulation, financial reporting, corporate transparency, climate change and assurance provision.
In response to the challenges presented to the accountancy profession by this new business environment, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has organised 'Accountancy Futures Symposium-Critical Issues for Tomorrow's Profession' here on November 24 and 25 to focus on following four areas: access to finance, audit and society, carbon accounting, and narrative reporting.
According to ACCA, this unique event will contribute to the forward agenda of the profession, business and society at large. More and more businesses demand from their finance function the ability to think about the future of the business, scan the horizon for business opportunities, design new business models and contribute to the innovation of products, services and processes.
As businesses position themselves through unique value propositions to gain competitive advantage, the war for talent will increase. Pakistan, with a growing young population of generation Y must appreciate the aspirations of both youth and employers. To leverage on this, the symposium would feature a special session on 'Generation Y: Realising the Potential'.
On November 24, Arif Masud Mirza, Head of ACCA Pakistan, will present address of welcome, followed by two sessions. Session one would devote to 'The value of audit in the modern world'. Setting the scene will be Vince Harris, CEO of Hub Power Company Ltd (Hobco). Tahir Jawaid, Vice-President of Human Resource and Public Affairs, Engro Corporation Ltd, would initiate discussion on 'Generation Y: Realising the Potential'.
Session 3, on November 25 on 'Demonstrating responsibility: Reporting Futures', would be piloted by Dr Afra Sajjad, Head of Education and Policy Development, ACCA Pakistan, and Session 4, relating to 'Accountants: SMEs' Best Friend' would be moderated by Mahreen Khan. Setting the scene would be Ms Saeeda Sabah Rashid, Financial Management Specialist, and 'The World Bank'.
The two-day symposium would conclude with a vote of thanks by Ms Ayla Majid, Vice-Chairman of ACCA, Pakistan. ACCA is the global body for professional accountants, supporting 140,000 members and 404,000 students throughout their careers. Experts from private and public sectors, who would participate in the discussions, include those from ICI, Engro Corporation, Unilever Pakistan, KESC, WWF Pakistan, Nestle Pakistan, NIT, World Bank, Ernst & Young Ford Rhodes Sidat Hyder & Co, Chartered Accountants, A F Ferguson & Co, Chartered Accounts, Naseeb Network, National Foods, M Yousuy Adil Saleem & Co, Chartered Accountants and Centre for International Private Enterprise (CIPE).
