Lahore High Court Chief Justice (CJ), Khawaja Muhammad Sharif, here on Tuesday disposed of suo motu proceeding about the abduction and torture on journalist Umar Cheema. The case was disposed as SP Jamil Ahmad Hashmi told the court that the ministry of interior has formed an inquiry commission under chairmanship of former Justice Mian Najamuz Zaman of LHC to probe into the case.
At this, the chief justice observed, "As the matter is benign inquired into by a retired judge of high court, therefore, suo motu proceeding is disposed of." The CJ had taken suo motu notice on a news report, according to which unidentified persons, accompanied by personnel of elite police, abducted Umar Cheema, reporter of an English daily, from sector I-8 Islamabad and kept him in six-hour long detention. They subjected him to severe torture by hanging him nude upside down and also shaved his head and moustache.
