The intelligence sleuths met Attorney-General Molvi Anwarul Haq on Tuesday and told him that there had been a major breakthrough regarding 11 missing prisoners' case, sources said. According to sources, soon after his meeting with sleuths, the Attorney-Aeneral filed an application in the Supreme Court, seeking early hearing of the case, already scheduled for December 13.
In his application, the Attorney-General stated that there has been a major development in the missing prisoners' case. Hence, the case may be heard on urgent basis. The case may be fixed for December 9, instead of 13, as the apex court had already warned the authorities concerned to apprise the court about the whereabouts of missing inmates, sources added. In its last hearing, the Supreme Court had hauled up the country's top spy agencies, including ISI, and raised questions about their functioning and asked on what ground they could claim that they should not be made party to the case regarding 11 missing prisoners from the premises of Adiala jail. In their unsigned reports submitted on Wednesday, the heads of intelligence agencies said the eleven missing prisoners were not in their custody.
Despite the report submitted on behalf of the three intelligence agencies, Punjab Home Secretary submitted the report that said that the missing prisoners were in the custody of ISI. The men went missing after an anti-terrorism court acquitted them of several charges, including a plot to attack President Pervez Musharraf, possession of suicide jackets and attacks on military installations. The Chief Justice had also contended that there was evidence to show the men were in the custody of the intelligence agencies. During the hearing, the court issued fresh notices seeking information to home secretary Punjab and other police and civil officials.
