Punjab Food Department on Monday sold 400,000 metric tons of wheat to different private parties for exports. Secretary Food Punjab Muhammad Irfan Elahi in a statement issued here said that this wheat was being sold at the rate of Rs 1000 per 40 kilograms from the wheat stored in godowns (last year crop) while the old wheat (two years old crop) stored under open skies in 'ganjis' would be given at the rate of Rs 975 per 40 kilograms.
He said that hopefully these parties would submit their letter of credit by tomorrow with the food department and then they would be allowed to lift the wheat for export purposes. He said negotiations with these parties were in process for some time and today these were finalised. It would not only help disposing off the excess wheat with the department but also create room in the godowns for storing the coming crop, he added.
The department on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Balochistan food department for another 100,000 metric tons of wheat. "Now we are waiting for money from Balochistan Food department and a schedule to lift their promised wheat from our godowns," Irfan added.
Similarly, Secretary Food said that another 50,000 metric tons of wheat would be given to World Food Programme (WFP). He said that it would be in addition to the earlier 100,000 metric ton purchased by the WFP from the provincial food department. These deals would also help the department to get handsome amount to pay back its bank loans taken for procurement of wheat during last season and make room for the coming crop also. He further said that wheat negotiated with these private parties, Balochistan and WFP would be given from Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan and Bahwalpur division storage of the department.
