Thousands joined the Jamaat-i-Islami protest against Pope Benedict's demand for repeal of the Blasphemy (of the Holy Prophet) Law besides the Law on the Finality of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) at Multan Road on Tuesday afternoon.
JI Secretary General, Liaquat Baloch, who led the rally, termed the pontiff's demand insane and a plot to threaten the Christian minority's security in the country and to plunge Pakistan into chaos and disorder. Hafiz Muhamamd Idrees, Director, Idara Ma'raf-e-Islami and JI deputy SG, Dr Farid Ahmed Piracha also addressed the rally.
Liaquat Baloch noted that the Pope's bias did not allow him to see the Zionists' atrocities on the Palestinians who had been murdered in millions. The Pope demanding Aasia Masih release, had perhaps been ignorant of the inhuman treatment still being meted out to the innocent Pakistani lady Dr Aafia Siddiqui.
He called upon the government to register a strong protest against the Pope's statement and seek its withdrawal. He also counselled the Christian leaders in the country and the Bishops to condemn and disown the Pope's stance on the issue and emphasised that the Blasphemy Law also protected the minorities in this country.
He said that the pope's biased and aggressive statement had caused a wave of anguish and hatred in the Muslim world as it was an attack on Pakistan's judicial system and an attempt to play with the religious sentiments of the Muslim majority. The Pontiff's statement, he said, had fully exposed the Western colonial's designs against Islam and the Muslims. Appreciating the massive rally in Karachi on the issue on Sunday, the JI leader said another rally would be staged in the Punjab capital on January 30. He added that this protest would continue till the parliamentary committee on the issue was scrapped and the amendment bill tabled by PPP member Sherry Rehman, was dropped from the record.
