Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader, Senator Ishaq Dar has underlined the need of transparency in the current taxation system to ensure financial autonomy. Senator Dar, in separately meetings with delegations from US embassy and the British High Commission here at Punjab House on Thursday, said that financial autonomy could be ensured only when the current sources of the national income were enhanced and transparency in the current system of taxation was introduced.
"Introduction of transparency in tax collection and controlling the slippages could also result in expansion of the tax net," he added. The US delegation was headed by the Political Counselor Jonathan Pratt and assisted by the Treasury Attaché David Murray, whereas the British delegation was headed by Deputy High Commissioner to Pakistan.
Referring to the PML-N's 10-point agenda, Senator Dar said that reforms agenda would be a milestone towards achieving economic stability, eliminating corruption, strengthening institutions and solving the problems of the people of Pakistan.
He said that the reforms agenda can recover the country from political and financial crisis provided it was followed in letter and spirit, adding that it could be helpful in reducing inflation, controlling prices, and stabilising the country's economy. He told the members of the delegation that the PML-N's agenda sought combat of corruption, inflation and bad governance, which were posing serious challenge to political and social stability. He mentioned that the government needed to improve governance and also laid stress on curtailing the expenditure and optimal utilisation of resources, which would ultimately guarantee economic stability in the country. Dar also emphasised that non-development expenditure be cut down through austerity measures and scaling down the staff working for the government.
