Hundreds of male and female students of University of Education (UoE) blocked the Mall road for more than an hour. The students were protesting against the removal of Dr Anwar-ul-Haq Pasha, the head of Information Technology Department, and his wife Dr Shaheen Pasha, assistant professor of Special Education, were fired by the vice chancellor last week.
Meanwhile, police restored to brutal baton-charge when the protesters announced to take out a rally from Punjab Assembly to Governor House. Earlier, students also staged a sit-in in front of the Varsity, calling for immediate restoration of the services of the suspended teachers. The police baton charged the protesting students who marched from university to Akbar Chowk.
Media was also not allowed to cover the incident. The police also baton charged the media persons who were covering the peaceful protest. The varsity management has made it clear that the teachers would not be restored. The students also boycotted the classes and examinations scheduled for Wednesday.
According to sources Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah met the student delegation of UoE in which he assured them that the suspended professors will be reinstated very soon. Meanwhile, Lahore Education Reporters Association (LERA) in their statement condemned the incident and demanded that government should take strict action against the police officers, who were involved in the torture of students and media.
