Partly Facetious: Time to balance the books

"So there is hectic activity to deal with the economic morass?"
Published January 22, 2011

"So there is hectic activity to deal with the economic morass?"
"Indeed, they have all come together to end the culture of corruption."
"Excuse me?"
"All political parties particularly PML (N) is talking to the government with the objective of putting the economy back on track."
"I Think Ishaq Dar needs to be fired. He was the man standing silently next to Hafeez Sheikh when that worthy said the deadline given by Dar's party leader was an artificial one. And need I add he was the one who folded when Musharraf had him in his jail and while Nawaz Sharif has not forgiven any one else he has looked the other way with Dar."
"Dar was chosen as Finance Minister during the brief honeymoon between the two men."
"Hey, that is very very serious charge in this country..."
"Hold your horses, I mean the honeymoon period between Nawaz Sharif and President Zardari after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto."
"Well, honeymoons are never for long anyway - one week, two seeks, and this one lasted a good six months or so."
"The honeymoon began once the new government took over control."
"OK, but going back to Dar his economic qualifications are not as stellar as, say, Sartaj Aziz's or indeed Hafeez Sheikh's...He is an accountant after all but he is the father-in-law of one of Nawaz Sharif's children."
"At this point in time we need to balance some books."
"So you think he is a good choice?"
"I think, he is dedicated, he is the one man who gave millions of rupees in charity out of his own pockets, he is..."
"And where did he make the millions?"
"As a Pakistani citizen I agree with what you are not saying, but he is one of the good guys, besides he has the necessary qualifications for a Finance Minister which Hafeez Sheikh does not have."
"I agree, he makes a noise and will not be bullied into supporting extravagance."
"Right."
