Simultaneous bomb blasts at two police stations rocked the city in the wee hours on Monday. According to police sources, two locally-made bombs jolted Eidgah and Shah Latif Town police stations at 9am, leaving a woman injured. They said these low-intensity blasts not only damaged both police stations but also hit nearby buildings badly.
They dispelled the impression that these blasts were intended to target police personnel, saying that these were low-intensity bomb blasts, which were exploded just to create panic in police. According to SP Saddar Town Irshad Sehar and SHO Eidgah Sohail Khan, these bombs went off simultaneously at Eidgah police station Lee Market and Shah Latif Town police station near National Highway in Malir.
They said that both blasts created 2 to 3 feet deep craters and damaged rooms, windowpanes and the outer walls of the police stations. They said the blasts caused minor injuries to a woman namely Fateh Bibi, wife of Muhammad Fateh, who was later shifted to Civil Hospital for treatment.
They said involvement of any terrorist group in these bomb blasts is yet to be ascertained as nobody has so far claimed responsibility for the blasts. When contacted, SP Bin Qasim Tanveer Alam Udho said the investigation teams of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), etc, have collected forensic evidence from the crime scene.
Meanwhile, SP CID Mazhar Mashwani said the culprits had used low intensity explosive in these blasts. He said the blasts did not hurt any policeman as the explosives were used without ball bearing and nut bolts. He said the explosives were packed in plastic jars, which were connected with manual safely timing devices. However, the officials of Bomb Disposal Squad claimed that both bombs containing same explosive, that was used in CID Centre blast. They said plastic jars, which were filled with small quantity of explosives were used with manually made detonators in these blasts.
They said the distance between the police stations rooms and the outer walls was over 50 meters, hence no injury to policemen. He added that the blasts could have been more harmful, if anyone came in contact within 30 meters range. They said a loud bang was heard one kilometre away from the sites. The FIRs have been registered by Eidgah and Shah Latif Police Stations against unknown culprits.
