Thousands of Shia protesters in Bahrain are demanding that naturalised Sunnis be stripped of their citizenship and sent out of the country. The latest demand comes after three weeks of marches demanding change in the Gulf state run by a Sunni dynasty.
Bahrain's Shias have long demanded rights and opportunities equal to those of the kingdom's Sunni citizens and Sunnis from Arab countries and Pakistan who have been naturalised in an effort to boost the minority's numbers. Tensions remain high in the island kingdom after a clash last week between Shias and Sunnis that injured at least a dozen people. Thousands marched on the immigration office in the capital of Manama on Wednesday, carrying slogans that said in Arabic "The naturalised must get out."
