As many as four people including advisor to provincial labour minister and a Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) activist fell prey to the ongoing wave of targeted killings in the city here on Monday. According to details, Hanif Khan Advocate, general secretary Awami National Party (ANP) Zone West, who was also an advisor to provincial labour minister Ameer Nawab, was killed near Agha Building in the limits of SITE A police station.
Hanif, 65, a resident of Agha Building SITE area, was shot and injured by unidentified armed men when he was going to offer Fajar prayers. He was rushed to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
After the incident, scores of ANP workers and local leaders rushed to JPMC and chanted slogans against the government and a coalition partner. Police said they had recovered two spent bullet cases from the spot. Meanwhile, ANP Sindh spokesman Qadir Khan condemned the incident and demanded of the government to arrest the culprits involved in the killing. The funeral prayer of the victim was offered at Khyber Chowk, Block 5 Metrovil.
Following the killing of Hanif, tension gripped many areas including Metrovil, Orangi Town, Qasba Colony, Katti Pahari, Empress Market, Abul Hassan Isphani Road, New M. A. Jinnah Road, Sohrab Goth, Pehalwan Goth, Rabia City and others. Miscreants resorted to heavy aerial firing and forced shopkeepers in the said areas to pull down their shutters, leaving three more people injured, who were shifted to JPMC and Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) from different parts of the city. Heavy contingents of police and rangers were deployed in these areas to bring the situation to normalcy. Police registered an FIR 198/11 against the unidentified men on the complaint of victim's son, Tariq.
In another incident, an activist of MQM was shot dead in Madina Colony in the jurisdiction of Gulshan-e-Iqbal police station. The deceased, Sajjad Butt, 28, son Ghulam Nabi Butt, was targeted when he was standing outside his restaurant situated at Block 13-G Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Resultantly, he received two bullets on his upper torso and died on the spot. The body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) for post-mortem. After the incident, tension prevailed in different localities of Gulshan Iqbal where all shops and markets were closed due to heavy aerial firing.
The victim was an activist of MQM. No case was registered till filing of this report. A scavenger was gunned down at Raita Plot Shah Faisal Colony in the limits of Shah Faisal Colony police station. The body of the victim, who was later identified as Peer Mohammad son of Abdul Majeed, was recovered by police from a garbage drum. The body was shifted to JPMC for post-mortem. In yet another incident, a religious teacher was shot dead in Khudadad Colony near Kashmir Complex in the jurisdiction of Brigade police station. The deceased Abdul Hafeez, 32, son of Mohammad Hanif, a resident of Ibn-e-Sina Lane Lines Area, was shot dead by unknown armed men when he was on the way to home near Kashmir Complex. The body was shifted to JPMC and later handed over his family.
