The Supreme Court was informed on Monday that the board of directors of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) will decide whether its incumbent managing-director Abdur Rashid Lone would continue or not as he is sticking to the slot for the last eight years with the expertise of getting the extension.
MD SNGPL Abdur Rashid Lone, now 68 is on contract for the last eight years, should have left after the Supreme Court order sending home employees working on contract basis after completion of their regular service, paving way for several others, deserving the post on merit.
The Supreme Court in its order said, "as far as the question of continuation of contract of incumbent Abdur Rashid Lone is concerned, the counsel undertakes that the matter shall be placed before the Board of Directors of the company and it would be pointed out that it would not be appropriate to allow him further to continue on contract so the other competent engineers may get a better chance for showing their talents in this behalf."
The BoD has no authority to decide the fate of SNGPL MD as Prime Minister is sole authority, having the powers to appoint or terminate the services of the MD. The job of BoD is to make recommendations only to strengthen the performance and improve the day-to-day business of the entity.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court disposed of a case regarding non-supply of gas connection to a citizen after assurance by SNGPL that no discrimination shall be resorted to on political access of any of the consumers in future. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry with Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani and Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany disposed of a suo motu case against the supply of gas connections on political basis and discretionary powers, taken on the letter of one Ghulam Fatima, a citizen of Gujjar Khan.
The lawyer for SNGPL submitted, "In future no discrimination shall be made nor political access of any of the consumers shall be entertained and the connection of gas shall be given in a highly transparent manner." He also made it clear that the aforesaid shall be incorporated as one of the principles of policy for allowing new gas connections to consumers.
